lies a volcano in the Democratic People's Republic
of Korea, better known in the West
as North Korea. It has been inactive
for more than 1,000 years, but it plays a huge role
in the imagination of the people. For millennia, it was considered
the mythical birthplace of the Korean nation. Today, the socialist government
co-opts this myth. This is the site of pilgrimages. Out of the mist, we saw a formation
of uniformed men with a flag emerging. We believed they were soldiers, but it turned out
they were university students come to rejoice in the power
that emanates from this place. [singing continues] [men speaking Korean] [cheering]
