of the autobiographical book The Education of Sonny Carson, the young protagonist is subjected to
extremes of Black masculinity, in a film that floats
between the brutal and the poetic. This time, director Michael Campus,
who also made The Mack, tells a story about a Black hero who can't outwit
the prison-industrial complex and is nearly suffocated by incarceration. For Sonny, the antidote
is moving from one urban tribe to another to prove his worth. One of its most harrowing scenes
