I thought I was telling a story that I had heard
about a young girl whose father died and the mother took her children
to live with relatives in another part of the country. Now I look at Tiger Eyes, and I know that it's about the loss of my father. I was engaged. Invitations were out to the wedding. My brother came back from overseas. My brother was in the Air Force. And I remember coming home, my father said,
"What a banner year for the Sussmans," and then he got pains
about a young girl whose father died and the mother took her children
