Mr. Henderson: Today we'll be discussing Erik Erikson and his psychosocial development theory. One of the key elements of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory is the development of the ego identity. Now, the ego identity, if you will, is the conscious sense of self that we all develop through social interaction. According to Eriksson, our ego identity is constantly changing through our daily interactions with others. He also believed that a personal sense of competence motivates our daily actions and behaviors. Each stage in his theory is concerned with becoming competent in an area of life. If the stage is handled well, the person will feel a sense of mastery also referred to as ego strength. If the stage is managed poorly, however the person will emerge with a sense of inadequacy

Today we'll be discussing Erik Erikson and his psychosocial development theory
00:00:57.524 --> 00:01:01.616
One of the key elements of Erikson's psychosocial stage theory
00:01:01.696 --> 00:01:03.918
is the development of the ego identity
00:01:03.998 --> 00:01:07.521
Now the ego identity if you will is the conscious sense of self
00:01:07.601 --> 00:01:09.703
that we all develop through social interaction
00:01:09.783 --> 00:01:13.761
According to Eriksson our ego identity is constantly changing
00:01:13.999 --> 00:01:16.001
through our daily interactions with others
00:01:16.011 --> 00:01:18.901
He also believed that a personal sense of competence
00:01:18.999 --> 00:01:21.444
motivates our daily actions and behaviors
00:01:21.982 --> 00:01:27.675
Each stage in his theory is concerned with becoming competent in an area of life
00:01:27.755 --> 00:01:31.001
If the stage is handled well the person will feel a sense of mastery
00:01:31.001 --> 00:01:34.001
also referred to as ego strength
00:01:34.596 --> 00:01:36.999
If the stage is managed poorly however
00:01:36.999 --> 00:01:39.001
the person will emerge with a sense of inadequacy
