NARRATOR: Archaeologist Mario Grimaldi is part of a team from the
University of Bologna that is investigating the
lives of middle-class people at the height of the Roman empire. The volcanic blanket over Pompeii
preserved its public spaces, its cemeteries, its
baths and its grand buildings. But it also preserved over
1,000 ordinary, private homes. These rarely survive elsewhere, so Pompeii offers a unique
opportunity for archaeologists. GRIMALDI: In Pompeii we have
the possibility to understand the real life, the people that
were living in these houses, with the material, the
artifacts that these people had in their hand before the eruption
