[about Vincent van Gogh]

Katherine Watson:
He painted what he felt, not what he saw. People didn't understand, to them it seemed childlike and crude. It took years for them to recognize his actual technique. To see the way his brush strokes seemed to make the night sky move. Yet, he never sold a painting in his lifetime. This is his self-portrait. There's no camouflage, no romance. Honesty. Now, sixty years later, where is he?
Giselle Levy:
Famous.
Katherine Watson:
So famous, in fact, that everybody has a reproduction. There are post cards...
Connie Baker:
We have the calendar.
Katherine Watson:
you go. With the ability to reproduce art, it is available to the masses. No one needs to own a van Gogh original, they can paint their own. Van Gogh in a box, ladies! The newest form of mass-distributed art; paint by numbers.
Connie Baker:
[reading from the box]
"Now everyone can be van Gogh. It's so easy. Just follow the simple instructions and in minutes, you're on your way to being an artist."
Giselle Levy:
Van Gogh by numbers?
Katherine Watson:
Ironic, isn't it? Look at what we have done to the man who refused to conform his ideals to popular taste. Who refused to compromise his integrity. We have put him in a tiny box and asked you to copy him.

00:00:00.992 --> 00:00:02.839
Sunflowers. Vincent van Gogh. 1888.
00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.317
He painted what he felt, not what he saw.
00:00:06.488 --> 00:00:09.075
People didn't understand. To them, it seemed childlike and crude.
00:00:09.912 --> 00:00:13.999
It took years for them to recognize his actual technique...
00:00:13.176 --> 00:00:16.885
...to see the way his brush strokes seemed to make the night sky move.
00:00:17.998 --> 00:00:20.626
Yet, he never sold a painting in his lifetime.
00:00:20.792 --> 00:00:22.702
This is his self-portrait.
00:00:22.871 --> 00:00:26.963
There's no camouflage, no romance. Honesty.
00:00:27.128 --> 00:00:32.278
- Now, 60 years later, where is he? - Famous?
00:00:32.044 --> 00:00:36.182
So famous, in fact, that everybody has a reproduction.
00:00:36.344 --> 00:00:39.246
- There are post cards... - We have the calendar.
00:00:39.416 --> 00:00:43.726
With the ability to reproduce art, it is available to the masses.
00:00:43.895 --> 00:00:46.997
No one needs to own a van Gogh original.
00:00:46.263 --> 00:00:49.003
We do. In the Newport house.
00:00:49.848 --> 00:00:52.783
But it's small. Tiny.
00:00:56.152 --> 00:00:59.283
They can paint their own. Van Gogh in a box, ladies.
00:00:59.448 --> 00:01:02.383
The newest form of mass-distributed art:
00:01:02.552 --> 00:01:04.003
Paint by numbers.
00:01:04.248 --> 00:01:07.001
"Now everyone can be van Gogh. It's so easy.
00:01:07.999 --> 00:01:09.491
Just follow the simple instructions...
00:01:09.001 --> 00:01:12.504
...and in minutes, you're on your way to being an artist."
00:01:13.496 --> 00:01:15.384
Van Gogh by numbers?
00:01:15.544 --> 00:01:19.001
Ironic, isn't it? Look at what we have done to the man...
00:01:19.999 --> 00:01:22.672
...who refused to conform his ideals to popular taste.
00:01:22.084 --> 00:01:25.001
Who refused to compromise his integrity.
00:01:25.943 --> 00:01:31.279
We have put him in a tiny box and asked you to copy him.
00:01:31.864 --> 00:01:33.489
So the choice is yours, ladies.
00:01:33.001 --> 00:01:37.911
You can conform to what other people expect or you can...
00:01:38.998 --> 00:01:40.919
I know. Be ourselves.
00:01:41.999 --> 00:01:43.669
You're a sight for sore eyes.
00:01:43.831 --> 00:01:47.955
I would've been on time but, silly me, I thought class was in the classroom.
00:01:48.119 --> 00:01:51.764
Glad you could join us, Mrs. Jones. We thought we'd lost you.
00:01:51.992 --> 00:01:54.048
- There's an unwritten rule for marr... - Don't bother.
00:01:54.001 --> 00:01:58.477
Since your wedding, you've missed six classes, a paper and your midterm.
00:01:58.648 --> 00:02:01.964
Well, thank God I didn't miss the paint-by-numbers lecture.
00:02:02.001 --> 00:02:05.646
I was on my honeymoon and then I had to set up house.
00:02:05.815 --> 00:02:08.999
- What does she expect? - Attendance.
00:02:10.999 --> 00:02:12.001
Most of the faculty turn their heads...
00:02:12.375 --> 00:02:15.001
...when the married students miss a class or two.
00:02:15.999 --> 00:02:17.001
Then why not get married as freshmen?
00:02:17.001 --> 00:02:22.001
That way you could graduate without actually ever stepping foot on campus.
00:02:23.512 --> 00:02:27.999
Don't disregard our traditions just because you're subversive.
00:02:29.997 --> 00:02:31.999
Don't disrespect this class just because you're married.
00:02:31.999 --> 00:02:34.999
Don't disrespect me just because you're not.
00:02:34.999 --> 00:02:37.999
Come to class, do the work, or I'll fail you.
00:02:37.999 --> 00:02:40.059
If you fail me, there will be consequences.
00:02:41.001 --> 00:02:45.393
- Are you threatening me? - I'm educating you.
00:02:45.001 --> 00:02:47.001
That's my job.
