I just knew my name to be Dede because no one could
pronounce Danai properly. And as a kid, you're just looking
to fit in as best as possible. When I was around five or
six, we moved to Zimbabwe, very soon after it had just
come out from colonial rule, and moved from being
called "Rhodesia," after a white man called
Cecil John Rhodes, to being called "Zimbabwe,"
which means "house of stone." I was in schooling systems
that were not prone to saying a lot of Shona names
pronounce Danai properly. And as a kid, you're just looking
