I was fascinated to conduct all the tests
and experiments. What results we would get. All of us did
our best to succeed. [narrator] But this
is no normal aircraft. The revolutionary design was intended to give
the Soviet military superiority
over their American rivals. The key to it all
is a scientific principle called ground effect. When a plane flies
very close to the ground, or say to a flat surface,
like the ocean, a cushion of air builds up
between that surface a cushion of air builds up
between that surface and the wing. And that gives the plane a little bit of extra lift. Which means you can float
very close to the ground, and at very high speeds,
and never touch it

I was fascinated to conduct
00:00:02.009 --> 00:00:04.633
all the tests
and experiments.
00:00:07.333 --> 00:00:09.266
What results we would get.
00:00:09.266 --> 00:00:11.266
All of us did
our best to succeed.
00:00:13.933 --> 00:00:18.333
[narrator] But this
is no normal aircraft.
00:00:18.333 --> 00:00:20.133
The revolutionary design
00:00:20.133 --> 00:00:22.566
was intended to give
the Soviet military
00:00:22.566 --> 00:00:25.004
superiority
over their American rivals.
00:00:27.001 --> 00:00:30.003
The key to it all
is a scientific principle
00:00:30.003 --> 00:00:31.966
called ground effect.
00:00:33.633 --> 00:00:36.002
When a plane flies
very close to the ground,
00:00:36.002 --> 00:00:40.133
or say to a flat surface,
like the ocean,
00:00:40.133 --> 00:00:41.833
a cushion of air builds up
between that surface
00:00:41.833 --> 00:00:42.008
a cushion of air builds up
between that surface
00:00:42.008 --> 00:00:42.833
and the wing.
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:45.266
And that gives the plane
00:00:45.266 --> 00:00:47.666
a little bit of extra lift.
00:00:47.666 --> 00:00:50.007
Which means you can float
very close to the ground,
00:00:50.007 --> 00:00:54.002
and at very high speeds,
and never touch it.
