Soviet icon, Nureyev, defected, which the West seized upon
as a failure for the Soviet Union, crashing back down to earth. The ideological conflict between
the two sides was escalating, and just two months after Nureyev
defected from the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall was erected in Germany, sort of symbolically embodying
