Rachel: So, Nolan's effort to spare his crew had failed, both the town and the orca had seen to that. I'd insisted on leaving South Harbor with them. I told myself that somehow I was responsible for Nolan's state of mind that I had filled his head with romantic notions about a whale capable not only of profound grief, which I believed but also of calculated and vindictive actions which I found hard to believe despite all that happened. Maybe I hope the voyage would show me another way to interpret the animal. It seemed a peculiar kind of human perversity to assume, but because the whale had an intelligence close to ours it would also have our most primitive and ugly emotion: vengeance. At this point I was sure of one thing: that his grief had made the orca wildly unpredictable and I felt an obligation to protect both it and Nolan, from the consequences of that insanity. Nolan however seemed sure of what was going to happen next, and that frightened me more than anything else. He set our course for the exact locale where he had killed the whale's mate. Nolan was certain that the creature would want to catch up with him there

So Nolan's effort to spare his crew had failed
00:00:04.962 --> 00:00:07.922
Both the town and the orca had seen to that
00:00:07.923 --> 00:00:11.001
I'd insisted on leaving South Harbor with them
00:00:11.093 --> 00:00:13.511
I told myself that somehow I was responsible
00:00:13.512 --> 00:00:15.638
for Nolan's state of mind
00:00:15.639 --> 00:00:17.064
that I had filled his head with romantic notions
00:00:17.641 --> 00:00:20.894
about a whale capable not only of profound grief
00:00:20.895 --> 00:00:22.562
which I believed
00:00:22.563 --> 00:00:25.607
but also of calculated and vindictive actions
00:00:25.608 --> 00:00:29.277
which I found hard to believe despite all that had happened
00:00:29.278 --> 00:00:30.082
Maybe I hoped the voyage would show me
00:00:30.821 --> 00:00:33.406
another way to interpret the animal
00:00:33.407 --> 00:00:36.576
It seemed a peculiar kind of human perversity to assume
00:00:36.577 --> 00:00:40.121
that because the whale had an intelligence close to ours
00:00:40.122 --> 00:00:41.079
it would also have our most primitive
00:00:41.791 --> 00:00:43.959
and ugly emotion vengeance
00:00:45.999 --> 00:00:47.962
At this point I was only sure of one thing
00:00:47.963 --> 00:00:51.132
That his grief had made the orca wildly unpredictable
00:00:51.133 --> 00:00:54.552
and I felt an obligation to protect both it and Nolan
00:00:54.553 --> 00:00:57.305
from the consequences of that insanity
00:00:57.306 --> 00:01:00.225
Nolan however seemed sure of what was going to happen next
00:01:00.226 --> 00:01:02.894
and that frightened me more than anything else
00:01:02.895 --> 00:01:05.002
He set our course for the exact locale
00:01:05.993 --> 00:01:07.524
where he had killed the whale's mate
00:01:07.001 --> 00:01:09.999
Nolan was certain that the creature would want
00:01:09.011 --> 00:01:10.001
to catch up with him there
00:01:15.095 --> 00:01:19.495
Excuse me well shouldn't somebody be up on the lookout
00:01:20.083 --> 00:01:22.623
He's not ready yet
00:01:34.001 --> 00:01:36.553
That's your gun oil the patch
00:01:36.554 --> 00:01:37.929
you won't get through the barrel
00:01:37.001 --> 00:01:39.848
I don't actually shoot whales
00:01:39.849 --> 00:01:43.997
If he should get me then you'll have to shoot him
00:01:43.002 --> 00:01:44.002
Self defense like
00:01:46.001 --> 00:01:47.999
Since when have you seriously considered
00:01:47.069 --> 00:01:48.069
that he might get you
00:01:48.691 --> 00:01:51.061
I've never seriously considered I said if
00:02:23.642 --> 00:02:24.477
It's him
