Dr. Fred Richmond: Like I said... the mother... Now to understand it the way I understood it, hearing it from the mother... that is, from the mother half of Norman's mind... you have to go back ten years, to the time when Norman murdered his mother and her lover. Now he was already dangerously disturbed, had been ever since his father died. His mother was a clinging, demanding woman, and for years the two of them lived as if there was no one else in the world. Then she met a man... and it seemed to Norman that she 'threw him over' for this man. Now that pushed him over the line and he killed 'em both. Matricide is probably the most unbearable crime of all... most unbearable to the son who commits it. So he had to erase the crime, at least in his own mind. He stole her corpse. A weighted coffin was buried. He hid the body in the fruit cellar. Even treated it to keep it as well as it would keep. And that still wasn't enough. She was there! But she was a corpse. So he began to think and speak for her, give her half his life, so to speak. At times he could be both personalities, carry on conversations. At other times, the mother half took over completely. Now he was never all Norman, but he was often only mother. And because he was so pathologically jealous of her, he assumed that she was jealous of him. Therefore, if he felt a strong attraction to any other woman, the mother side of him would go wild. [Points finger at Lila Crane] Dr. Fred Richmond: When he met your sister, he was touched by her... aroused by her. He wanted her. That set off the 'jealous mother' and 'mother killed the girl'! Now after the murder, Norman returned as if from a deep sleep. And like a dutiful son, covered up all traces of the crime he was convinced his mother had committed!

00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.753
Now, to understand it the way I understood it, hearing it from the mother,
00:00:07.337 --> 00:00:10.059
that is, from the mother half of Norman's mind,
00:00:11.175 --> 00:00:13.593
you have to go back 1 0 years
00:00:14.052 --> 00:00:17.043
to the time when Norman murdered his mother and her lover.
00:00:17.514 --> 00:00:22.393
Now, he was already dangerously disturbed, had been ever since his father died.
00:00:23.437 --> 00:00:27.064
His mother was a clinging, demanding woman,
00:00:28.567 --> 00:00:33.279
and for years the two of them lived as if there was no one else in the world.
00:00:33.697 --> 00:00:35.049
Then she met a man,
00:00:35.991 --> 00:00:39.827
and it seemed to Norman that she threw him over for this man.
00:00:40.579 --> 00:00:44.029
Now, that pushed him over the line and he killed them both.
00:00:44.875 --> 00:00:48.628
Matricide is probably the most unbearable crime of all,
00:00:50.001 --> 00:00:53.999
most unbearable to the son who commits it.
00:00:54.002 --> 00:00:58.846
So he had to erase the crime, at least in his own mind.
00:01:01.892 --> 00:01:03.684
He stole her corpse.
00:01:06.023 --> 00:01:08.999
A weighted coffin was buried.
00:01:09.316 --> 00:01:11.901
He hid the body in the fruit cellar,
00:01:12.361 --> 00:01:15.238
even treated it to keep it as well as it would keep.
00:01:15.322 --> 00:01:17.532
And that still wasn't enough.
00:01:18.325 --> 00:01:21.953
She was there, but she was a corpse.
00:01:24.498 --> 00:01:27.291
So he began to think and speak for her,
00:01:27.376 --> 00:01:29.919
give her half his life, so to speak.
00:01:30.001 --> 00:01:34.059
At times he could be both personalities, carry on conversations.
00:01:35.676 --> 00:01:39.178
At other times, the mother half took over completely.
00:01:39.001 --> 00:01:44.001
He was never all Norman, but he was often only Mother,
00:01:45.999 --> 00:01:49.023
and because he was so pathologically jealous of her,
00:01:49.069 --> 00:01:52.149
he assumed that she was as jealous of him.
00:01:52.999 --> 00:01:56.779
Therefore, if he felt a strong attraction to any other woman,
00:01:57.001 --> 00:02:00.533
the mother side of him would go wild.
00:02:03.999 --> 00:02:05.872
When he met your sister,
00:02:07.249 --> 00:02:09.542
he was touched by her, aroused by her.
00:02:09.626 --> 00:02:11.001
He wanted her.
00:02:13.297 --> 00:02:17.001
That set off the jealous mother, and Mother killed the girl.
00:02:18.999 --> 00:02:22.001
After the murder, Norman returned as if from a deep sleep,
00:02:23.999 --> 00:02:27.184
and, like a dutiful son, covered up all traces of the crime
00:02:27.001 --> 00:02:29.999
he was convinced his mother had committed !
00:02:29.999 --> 00:02:32.315
Why was he dressed like that?
00:02:32.774 --> 00:02:34.001
He's a transvestite.
00:02:35.999 --> 00:02:37.999
Not exactly.
00:02:37.779 --> 00:02:41.001
A man who dresses in women's clothing in order to achieve a sexual change
00:02:41.999 --> 00:02:43.999
or satisfaction is a transvestite.
00:02:43.827 --> 00:02:48.999
But in Norman's case, he was simply doing everything possible
00:02:48.999 --> 00:02:51.001
to keep alive the illusion of his mother being alive.
00:02:53.001 --> 00:02:55.755
And when reality came too close,
00:02:55.839 --> 00:02:59.001
when danger or desire threatened that illusion,
00:03:01.072 --> 00:03:04.001
he'd dress up, even to a cheap wig he bought.
00:03:04.999 --> 00:03:09.002
He'd walk about the house, sit in her chair, speak in her voice.
00:03:09.001 --> 00:03:11.001
He tried to be his mother.
00:03:13.273 --> 00:03:15.001
And now he is.
00:03:17.999 --> 00:03:21.113
That's what I meant when I said I got the story from the mother.
00:03:21.001 --> 00:03:24.999
You see, when the mind houses two personalities,
00:03:25.997 --> 00:03:27.703
there's always a conflict, a battle.
00:03:28.999 --> 00:03:31.999
In Norman's case, the battle is over,
00:03:32.292 --> 00:03:34.001
and the dominant personality has won.
00:03:34.999 --> 00:03:37.999
And the $40,000? Who got that?
00:03:38.001 --> 00:03:42.999
The swamp. These were crimes of passion, not profit.
00:03:44.001 --> 00:03:48.999
He feels a little chill. Can I bring him this blanket?
00:03:48.999 --> 00:03:50.434
-Oh, sure. -All right.
00:04:02.001 --> 00:04:04.001
(NORMAN AS MRS. BATES) Thank you.
00:04:11.999 --> 00:04:15.003
MRS. BATES: lt's sad when a mother has to speak the words
00:04:15.001 --> 00:04:17.998
that condemn her own son,
00:04:17.002 --> 00:04:21.975
but l couldn't allow them to believe that l would commit murder.
00:04:21.998 --> 00:04:25.024
They'll put him away now, as l should have years ago.
00:04:25.762 --> 00:04:27.998
He was always bad,
00:04:27.998 --> 00:04:32.998
and in the end he intended to tell them l killed those girls and that man,
00:04:33.979 --> 00:04:36.999
as if l could do anything except just sit and stare,
00:04:36.003 --> 00:04:39.998
like one of his stuffed birds.
00:04:40.987 --> 00:04:43.529
They know l can't even move a finger, and l won't.
00:04:43.613 --> 00:04:49.999
l'll just sit here and be quiet, just in case they do suspect me.
00:04:52.001 --> 00:04:55.002
They're probably watching me. Well, let them.
00:04:56.003 --> 00:04:58.998
Let them see what kind of a person l am.
00:05:00.013 --> 00:05:02.548
l'm not even gonna swat that fly.
00:05:02.001 --> 00:05:05.001
l hope they are watching. They'll see.
00:05:05.002 --> 00:05:07.553
They'll see and they'll know,
00:05:07.637 --> 00:05:12.002
and they'll say, "Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly."
