By adopting Gemellus,
Caligula is basically saying, "You know what? This guy could be
my competitor, but instead, I'm gonna be his adopted father, I'm gonna take care of him
and be his protector." In retrospect,
Gemellus would always be a threat, but Caligula wasn't going to rock the boat
that early on. He wasn't going to go down
the same route as Tiberius. He was being a good guy. It was the most sensible thing
that he could've done at the time
