Saturday Night

Uh, gentlemen, how long have you been standing there? Long enough. Lorne, we need to let...

[the affiliates, led by NBC executive Dave Tebet, have walked in on Garrett Morris performing "Gonna Kill Every Whitey I See"]
Lorne Michaels: Uh, gentlemen, how long have you been standing there?
Dave Tebet: [deadpan] Long enough.
Audrey Dickman: Lorne, we need to let the audience in.
Dave Tebet: [to Audrey, without looking at her] No, you don't.
[to Lorne, almost consolingly]
Dave Tebet: Perhaps you kids aren't quite ready for prime-time.
Lorne Michaels: What-- what are you talking about?
Dave Tebet: You haven't locked a script. Your actors are missing. Your crew is in open rebellion.
[chuckles]
Dave Tebet: They'd be laughing at you in Burbank.
Rosie Shuster: Burbank? Excuse me, this is New York fucking City.
Dave Tebet: Who's she?
Lorne Michaels: She... It's...
Rosie Shuster: It's... I...
Lorne Michaels: It's complicated. W-We have a hell of a show. We have two bands. We have seven of the brightest comedy minds alive.
Dave Tebet: Do you even know where they are?
Lorne Michaels: Uh, most of them. Yes.
Dave Tebet: Maybe we'll just try again next Saturday.
Lorne Michaels: Don't do that. Come on. No. Everybody in this room has been killing themselves to make something special.
Dave Tebet: I know.
Lorne Michaels: To make something innovative and actually good, for a change.
Dave Tebet: [offended] "For a change"?
Lorne Michaels: Don't tell me that you've been doing this so long that you can't even recognize the potential for greatness when it's right in front of your face.
Dave Tebet: Do you even know what this show is? Tell me.
[Lorne pauses, looks back at Rosie and then back to Tebet]
Lorne Michaels: It's an all-nighter in the city. It's catching Richard Pryor at a drop-in or finding Paul Simon strumming in the back of a dive bar. It's meeting a girl outside a bodega and getting lucky in a phone booth. It's... it's everything you think is going to happen when you move to the city. That's our show. That's "Saturday Night".
Dave Tebet: Show me.
Lorne Michaels: Show you what?
Dave Tebet: Show me "Saturday Night"
