In the '50s and '60s, "playboy" was instrumental in advancing the first amendment and freedom of speech. And the magazine was able to pursue issues and social concerns that just weren't being addressed in american society. Look at civil rights. - I knew all along that hef was a champion of civil rights, one, because I read the magazine, so I saw some of the people that he had done articles with, including malcolm x.
