Over in metalwork conservation,
after a thorough spit and polish, the medieval cluster brooch
is ready for inspection. Jo, it's just remarkable
what you've done because it really brings
the jewel to life. And now the soil's gone,
you can really see. Every single element
seems to be almost suspended. It is amazing. There's no denying
it was a bit of a fiddle! With so few of these cluster
brooches in the world to study, James hopes the conservation
will provide some vital clues to its previous life. What it expresses, of course,
is, you know, this great kind of sophistication and taste
of the person who made it, and, of course,
the person who wore it. It is occurring at a time of,
you know, great, sort of,
international trade and exchange. And the idea of this being the only
brooch found of its type on British soil suggests that either someone
came across from the Netherlands or France wearing it, or it was
bought by someone from Britain travelling to Continental Europe
