teeming down with rain, and there's
water running down the track and you're soaking wet, covered in
leeches... ..it takes on another dimension. And, of course, it comes at
a great human cost. A lot of these poor people, who have
come from all over the world, were working in atrocious conditions
and worked to their death. But the fact that it takes nearly
a quarter of a century to build this line means that there were
people there who were never going to give up, no matter
what was being thrown against them. Built in the north eastern tip
of Australia, in the state of Queensland, the original railway line of the
network stretched from Cairns on the Pacific
coast, and finished inland at the town of
Herberton
