This forgotten train line,
which was never completed, was rediscovered during the '90s
after the Reunification. Construction of the
Helmets Valley Line started in 1944, with the use of forced labour
from the nearby concentration camp at Nordhausen - Mittelbau-Dora. The Nazis had ordered the prisoners
to lay the standard gauge track at high speed in order to relieve
the build-up of rail traffic on the main line
