Then, I wrote a letter to his family. I didn't want them to find out
by official army letter. An army letter is never good news. So I wrote a letter, myself. A pretty good one, I thought. Dear Madame/Monsieur,
my mame is Albert Maillard. I'm a comrade of Edouard's. With immense sadness, I inform you
that he died in combat on Nov. 9, '18. Army Administration has likely
informed you officially. But I can tell you he died a hero,
as he charged the enemy in defense of our nation. He was formidable. Edouard left me his sketchbooks
--he loved drawing-- to send to you,
if anything happened to him. And as something did happen to him,
here it is. Edouard rests in peace
in a lovely, tranquil, little cemetery. He's in a fine spot. Respectfully, Albert Maillard
