Jeanne:
It's happening, isn't it? [Looks silently at an equally silent Augustin before angrily returning to preparing dinner] Jeanne:
I should never have listened to you! We should have left a long time ago for Kenya or for Senegal, I don't know, but...! Augustin:
I'm in the military. This is our home. Jeanne:
Yes, but tell me: how can I call this home when I'm living in constant fear, Augustin? I already lost most of my family in '92. There's only us now. Augustin:
I can't just get up and run! Abandon everything? What? Jeanne:
We should have brought Anne-Marie back sooner! Augustin:
She's safer in the countryside than in Kigali. Come on! Jeanne:
[Snaps in frustration]
Come on, wake up!... Nobody is safe in this country! Have you seen the Hutu Ten Commandments? [Shows Augustin a flier] Jeanne:
Somebody put it on my desk today at the hospital! They even underlined number seven: "The Rwandese Armed Forces shall be exclusively Hutu; no member of the military shall marry a Tutsi." [Huffs angrily, walking toward the window] Augustin:
[Tries to calm Jeanne]
Jeanne... Jeanne:
Now I'm talking about our children's lives. If anything happens, they will let us all die

I KNEW I SHOULDN'T
HAVE LISTENED TO YOU.
00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:08.501
WE SHOULD HAVE GONE A LONG
TIME AGO TO KENYA OR SENEGAL.
00:00:08.567 --> 00:00:10.534
I DON'T KNOW, BUT...
00:00:10.601 --> 00:00:12.601
I'M IN THE MILITARY.
00:00:14.467 --> 00:00:16.434
THIS IS OUR HOME.
00:00:16.501 --> 00:00:18.434
SURE, BUT TELL ME
00:00:18.501 --> 00:00:20.434
HOW CAN I CALL
THIS HOME
00:00:20.501 --> 00:00:22.668
WHEN I'M LIVING IN
CONSTANT FEAR, AUGUSTIN?
00:00:26.867 --> 00:00:30.668
I LOST ALREADY MOST
OF MY FAMILY IN '92.
00:00:30.734 --> 00:00:34.234
- IT'S ONLY US NOW.
- I CAN'T JUST GET UP AND RUN!
00:00:34.301 --> 00:00:37.009
- ABANDON EVERYTHING, WHAT? - WE SHOULD
HAVE BROUGHT ANNE-MARIE BACK SOONER.
00:00:37.967 --> 00:00:40.367
ANNE-MARIE IS SAFER IN
THE COUNTRYSIDE THAN HERE.
00:00:40.434 --> 00:00:42.833
COME ON, WAKE UP!
00:00:42.009 --> 00:00:45.634
NOBODY'S SAFE
IN THIS COUNTRY.
00:00:49.501 --> 00:00:51.567
YOU HAVE SEEN THE BAHUTU
TEN COMMANDMENTS?
00:00:55.601 --> 00:00:57.534
SOMEBODY PUT IT
ON MY DESK
00:00:57.601 --> 00:00:59.601
TODAY AT THE HOSPITAL.
00:01:02.601 --> 00:01:05.467
THEY EVEN UNDERLINED
NUMBER SEVEN.
00:01:06.501 --> 00:01:08.001
"THE RWANDESE ARMED FORCES
00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:10.999
SHOULD BE EXCLUSIVELY HUTU.
00:01:10.768 --> 00:01:13.434
NO MEMBER OF MILITARY
00:01:13.501 --> 00:01:16.006
SHALL MARRY A TUTSI."
00:01:36.002 --> 00:01:38.002
JEANNE.
00:01:40.501 --> 00:01:43.301
JEANNE.
00:01:52.993 --> 00:01:54.601
NOW I'M TALKING ABOUT
OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES.
00:01:57.867 --> 00:02:00.634
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS,
THEY WILL LET US ALL DIE.
00:02:00.999 --> 00:02:02.501
OKAY, JEANNE.
00:02:02.999 --> 00:02:05.134
JUST LET ME FIGURE
SOMETHING OUT.
00:02:05.002 --> 00:02:08.999
FOR NOW, WHY DON'T YOU CALL
ANNE-MARIE AND TELL HER TO GET READY?
00:02:08.267 --> 00:02:11.999
- UNCLE!
- HEY, MARCUS!
00:02:11.999 --> 00:02:14.267
THIS IS YOUR BROTHER. I'M SORRY.
I'M NOT IN THE MOOD FOR IT TODAY.
00:02:17.334 --> 00:02:20.999
AUGUSTIN, IT'S A SMALL
COUNTRY AND PEOPLE TALK.
00:02:20.999 --> 00:02:22.999
SO NOW YOU THINK I
HAVE JOINED THE REBELS?
00:02:22.999 --> 00:02:25.001
OF COURSE NOT. BUT YOU MUST
HAVE SAID OR DONE SOMETHING.
00:02:25.999 --> 00:02:27.334
I AM DOING WHAT
I HAVE ALWAYS DONE.
00:02:27.001 --> 00:02:29.833
THAT MAY NOT BE ENOUGH. YOU
NEED TO BE ON THE RIGHT SIDE.
00:02:29.001 --> 00:02:31.833
AND WHAT SIDE IS THAT?!
00:02:31.001 --> 00:02:33.833
HSST!
