There was a time
when Spider-Man received a check as a reward for something he had done,
made out to Spider-Man and he went to a bank to cash it
in his Spider-Man costume and the teller said,
"Well, I can't cash this check, - "I need identification."
- (WOMAN LAUGHS) And he said, "Oh, I'm wearing
a Spider-Man costume." He said, "Anybody could wear
a Spider-Man costume." He was never able to cash the check. I wanted those books,
more than anything else, to be fun. And I wanted everything in them
to attract the readers' attention and to cause the readers to talk. And I wanted to do whatever I could to set our books aside
and apart from the rest. I was just having fun. Anything I thought of I said,
"That's a good idea. "I'm gonna write, 'The world's
greatest comic.' What the hell." INTERVIEWER: You describe what you call
the wild wondrous world of Marvel Comics

when Spider-Man received a check
00:00:04.128 --> 00:00:07.084
as a reward for something he had done,
made out to Spider-Man
00:00:07.084 --> 00:00:11.302
and he went to a bank to cash it
in his Spider-Man costume
00:00:11.302 --> 00:00:14.388
and the teller said,
"Well, I can't cash this check,
00:00:14.388 --> 00:00:16.349
- "I need identification."
- (WOMAN LAUGHS)
00:00:16.349 --> 00:00:18.768
And he said, "Oh, I'm wearing
a Spider-Man costume."
00:00:18.768 --> 00:00:21.229
He said, "Anybody could wear

00:00:23.439 --> 00:00:25.608
He was never able to cash the check.
00:00:28.236 --> 00:00:33.282
I wanted those books,
more than anything else, to be fun.
00:00:33.282 --> 00:00:37.703
And I wanted everything in them
to attract the readers' attention
00:00:37.703 --> 00:00:40.456
and to cause the readers to talk.
00:00:41.249 --> 00:00:42.792
And I wanted to do whatever I could
00:00:42.792 --> 00:00:46.879
to set our books aside
and apart from the rest.
00:00:47.063 --> 00:00:49.131
I was just having fun.
00:00:49.131 --> 00:00:51.259
Anything I thought of I said,
"That's a good idea.
00:00:51.259 --> 00:00:54.136
"I'm gonna write, 'The world's
greatest comic.' What the hell."
