We produce about two complete
comic books a day. It's like a production line. If you ever saw the old Charlie Chaplin
movie Modern Times, there was a scene where Charlie Chaplin
is on a production line and his job
is to do this with two wrenches while things come down
and he has to tighten the bolts and he goes home at night
and he's still doing this, you know. Well, sometimes we feel like that.
We don't even know what we're working on. The pages are just coming by and... "Proofread that. Change that title, "get the lettering out and finish." And off it goes. Two books a day. In those days, everybody was just
busy doing his work. There was a lot of pressure
to turn those things out in time. Because of the fact that
they don't get paid very much per page and that they have to do a lot of pages
a day in order to eke out a living, the artists would say
that they don't have a chance to really show how good they are. Sometime around then, Kirby left

We produce about two complete
comic books a day.
00:00:04.128 --> 00:00:05.713
It's like a production line.
00:00:05.713 --> 00:00:09.801
If you ever saw the old Charlie Chaplin
movie Modern Times,
00:00:09.801 --> 00:00:12.595
there was a scene where Charlie Chaplin
is on a production line
00:00:12.595 --> 00:00:14.806
and his job
is to do this with two wrenches
00:00:14.806 --> 00:00:18.999
while things come down
and he has to tighten the bolts
00:00:18.999 --> 00:00:21.104
and he goes home at night
and he's still doing this, you know.
00:00:21.104 --> 00:00:24.941
Well, sometimes we feel like that.
We don't even know what we're working on.
00:00:24.941 --> 00:00:26.734
The pages are just coming by and...
00:00:26.734 --> 00:00:28.694
"Proofread that. Change that title,
00:00:28.694 --> 00:00:30.446
"get the lettering out and finish."
00:00:30.446 --> 00:00:31.906
And off it goes. Two books a day.
00:00:33.741 --> 00:00:36.452
In those days, everybody was just
busy doing his work.
00:00:37.001 --> 00:00:40.001
There was a lot of pressure
to turn those things out in time.
00:00:40.748 --> 00:00:43.096
Because of the fact that
they don't get paid very much per page
00:00:43.096 --> 00:00:47.797
and that they have to do a lot of pages
a day in order to eke out a living,
00:00:47.797 --> 00:00:49.966
the artists would say
that they don't have a chance
00:00:49.966 --> 00:00:51.717
to really show how good they are.
00:00:54.595 --> 00:00:56.722
Sometime around then, Kirby left.
