I yelled my head off about labor and its responsibilities and I'm going to lay it right...

Grant Matthews: I yelled my head off about labor and its responsibilities and I'm going to lay it right on the line for industry too. Now look here, Jim. You know just as well as I do that there are men at that banquet who will be rooting for a depression just so they can slap labor's ears back
Jim Conover: I suppose you have a few well-chosen words to say about tax reduction?
Grant Matthews: You better not worry so much about tax reduction until we accomplish some of the things we have to accomplish. I'm going to tell them that the wealthiest nation in the world is a failure unless it's also the healthiest nation in the world. That means the highest medical care for the lowest income groups... And I'm going to tell them the American dream is not making money. It is the wellbeing and the freedom of the individual throughout the world, from Patagonia to Detroit... And I'm going to tell them there's only one government which is capable of handling the atomic control, world disarmament, world employment, world peace, and that's a world government. The people of 13 states started the United States of America. Well, I think the people of that many nations are now ready to start a United States of the World, and I mean a UNITED states of the World, with one bill of rights, one international law, one international currency, one international citizenship, and I'm going to tell them that the brotherhood of man is not just an idealistic dream, but a practical necessity if man is going to survive. [Conover gets up, disgusted]
Grant Matthews: where are you going?
Jim Conover: I'm going out and get pie-eyed and I'm going back to Washington.
Grant Matthews: You're walking out on me?
Jim Conover: Well if you're going to climb out on a limb like that and saw it off behind you! You've already scared off big labor, and if tonight you scare off big business, you're a dead duck.
Grant Matthews, Jim Conover: Jim, they've got to know where I stand, I told you that at the start. I've got to be on record - nomination or no nomination.
Jim Conover: All right, but not here, not tonight, not when you're on a radio hookup. Save it for some time when you're out in Nebraska or Oklahoma

I yelled my head off about labor and its responsibilities
00:00:03.903 --> 00:00:06.337
I'm going to lay it right on the line for industry too
00:00:06.406 --> 00:00:07.634
Now look here Jim
00:00:07.807 --> 00:00:09.331
you know just as well as I do
00:00:09.409 --> 00:00:11.468
that there are men at that banquet who'll be rooting
00:00:11.544 --> 00:00:14.536
for a depression just so they can slap labor's ears back
00:00:14.647 --> 00:00:18.708
And I suppose you have a few well chosen words to say about tax reduction
00:00:19.585 --> 00:00:21.519
You better not worry so much about tax reduction
00:00:21.587 --> 00:00:24.886
until we accomplish some of the things we have to accomplish
00:00:25.692 --> 00:00:29.128
I'm going to tell them that the wealthiest nation in the world is a failure
00:00:29.195 --> 00:00:31.561
unless it's also the healthiest nation in the world
00:00:31.664 --> 00:00:34.394
That means the highest medical care for the lowest income groups
00:00:34.005 --> 00:00:36.331
And that goes for housing too
00:00:36.803 --> 00:00:38.964
One thing this nation is not rich enough to afford
00:00:39.997 --> 00:00:40.938
is not having a roof over our heads
00:00:41.674 --> 00:00:45.003
And I'm going to tell them that the American Dream is not making money
00:00:45.144 --> 00:00:47.305
It is the well being and the freedom of the individual
00:00:47.038 --> 00:00:48.506
throughout the world
00:00:48.581 --> 00:00:50.708
from Patagonia to Detroit
00:00:51.217 --> 00:00:54.744
We can't be an island of plenty in a world of starvation
00:00:55.254 --> 00:00:59.019
We have to send food clothing machinery and money
00:00:59.592 --> 00:01:02.755
to the bitter impoverished people of the world
00:01:03.998 --> 00:01:05.462
Try to recreate their self respect
00:01:05.965 --> 00:01:09.128
Give them the desire again for individual freedom
00:01:09.235 --> 00:01:13.262
And I'm gonna tell them that as long as dictatorships remain in the world
00:01:13.372 --> 00:01:15.363
we better remain well armed
00:01:15.441 --> 00:01:18.501
Because the next time we're not going to get two years to get ready
00:01:18.578 --> 00:01:20.876
They're gonna jump us overnight
00:01:21.414 --> 00:01:24.383
And I'm gonna tell them that there's only one government
00:01:24.045 --> 00:01:27.613
which is capable of handling the atomic control
00:01:28.003 --> 00:01:33.286
world disarmament world employment world peace and that's a world government
00:01:34.001 --> 00:01:37.752
The people of 13 states started the United States of America
00:01:38.331 --> 00:01:39.889
I think the people of that many nations
00:01:39.999 --> 00:01:42.764
are now ready to start a United States of the World
00:01:42.999 --> 00:01:44.496
With or without Russia
00:01:44.604 --> 00:01:47.767
And I mean a United States of the World
00:01:47.084 --> 00:01:49.001
With one Bill of Rights
00:01:49.776 --> 00:01:51.744
One international law
00:01:51.001 --> 00:01:55.645
One international currency One international citizenship
00:01:56.001 --> 00:01:58.883
And I'm going to tell them that the brotherhood of man
00:01:58.999 --> 00:02:01.749
is not just an idealist dream
00:02:01.821 --> 00:02:05.154
but a practical necessity if man is going to survive
00:02:05.258 --> 00:02:07.249
And I'm Where're you going
00:02:07.999 --> 00:02:10.991
I'm going out to get pie eyed then I'm going back to Washington
00:02:10.999 --> 00:02:11.999
You're walking out on me
00:02:11.001 --> 00:02:14.999
If you're going to climb out on a limb like that and saw it off behind you
00:02:14.005 --> 00:02:15.001
Let me remind you
00:02:15.999 --> 00:02:19.987
Up to now you haven't got one pledged delegate to that Convention
00:02:19.999 --> 00:02:21.955
You know how many you need to be nominated
00:02:21.999 --> 00:02:23.999
About 550 Think that over
00:02:23.081 --> 00:02:25.999
You've already scared off big labor
00:02:25.999 --> 00:02:27.999
and if you scare off big business you're a dead duck
00:02:27.999 --> 00:02:30.001
They've got to know where I stand I told you that at the start
00:02:30.001 --> 00:02:32.999
I've got to be on record nomination or no nomination
00:02:33.992 --> 00:02:36.999
All right but not here Not tonight Not when you're on a radio hook up
00:02:36.999 --> 00:02:38.999
Give it sometime when you're out in Nebraska or Oklahoma
