Back in the '50s,
we were really segregated. The white DJs were supposed
to play their white artists for their white audiences, the Black DJs were supposed
to do the same thing. There was Little Richard,
Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry. When courageous DJs
like Alan Freed started playing
those Black records for their white audiences, that's when rock and roll
went to another dimension. Popular music became an instrument
for social change, and launched
a cultural phenomenon known as
the British Invasion. Ironically,
the British Invasion had the unintended
consequence of putting all those
pioneers out of work. If you had two hits
when the Beatles came, you were gonna
play those two hits the rest of your life

that's when rock and roll
went to another dimension.
00:00:26.109 --> 00:00:27.036
Popular music became
00:00:27.036 --> 00:00:29.195
an instrument
for social change,
00:00:29.195 --> 00:00:31.197
and launched
a cultural phenomenon

known as
the British Invasion.
00:00:33.866 --> 00:00:35.785
Ironically,
the British Invasion
00:00:35.785 --> 00:00:38.999
had the unintended
consequence
00:00:38.999 --> 00:00:41.249
of putting all those
pioneers out of work.
00:00:41.249 --> 00:00:43.071

you were gonna
play those two hits
00:00:45.067 --> 00:00:47.999
the rest of your life.
