Thank You for Smoking

If he really wants a cigarette. I'll buy him his first pack

Senator Dupree: [during the Senate subcommittee] Mr. Naylor, there's no need for theatrics.\nNick Naylor: I'm sorry. I just don't see the point in a warning label for something people already know.\nSenator Dupree: The warning symbol is a reminder, a reminder of the dangers of smoking cigarettes.\nNick Naylor: Well, if we want to remind people of danger why don't we slap a skull and crossbones on all Boeing airplanes, Senator Lothridge. And all Fords, Senator Dupree.\nSenator Ortolan Finistirre: That is ridiculous. The death toll from airline and automobile accidents doesn't even skim the surface cigarettes. They don't even compare.\nNick Naylor: Oh, this from a Senator who calls Vermont home.\nSenator Ortolan Finistirre: I don't follow you, Mr. Naylor.\nNick Naylor: Well, the real demonstrated #1 killer in America is cholesterol. And here comes Senator Finistirre whose fine state is, I regret to say, clogging the nation's arteries with Vermont Cheddar Cheese. If we want to talk numbers, how about the millions of people dying of heart attacks? Perhaps Vermont Cheddar should come with a skull and crossbones.\nSenator Ortolan Finistirre: That is lu - . The great state of Vermont will not apologize for its cheese!\nSenator Lothridge: Mr. Naylor, we are here to discuss cigarettes - not planes, not cars - cigarettes. Now as we discussed earlier these warning labels are not for those who know but rather for those who don't know. What about the children?\nNick Naylor: Gentlemen, it's called education. It doesn't come off the side of a cigarette carton. it comes from our teachers, and more importantly our parents. It is the job of every parent to warn their children of all the dangers of the world, including cigarettes, so that one day when they get older they can choose for themselves. I look at my son who was kind enough to come with me today, and I can't help but think that I am responsible for his growth and his development. And I'm proud of that.\nSenator Ortolan Finistirre: Well, having said that, would you condone him smoking?\nNick Naylor: Well, of course not. He's not 18. That would be illegal.\nSenator Ortolan Finistirre: Yes, I've heard you deliver that line on 20/20, but enough dancing. What are you going to do when he turns 18? C'mon, Mr. Naylor. On his 18th birthday will you share a cigarette with him? Will you spend a lovely afternoon - like one of your ludicrous cigarette advertisements? You seem to have to have a lot to say about how we should raise our children. What of your own? What are you going to do when he turns 18?\nNick Naylor: If he really wants a cigarette. I'll buy him his first pack

Now Mr Naylor
00:00:02.068 --> 00:00:03.592
I have to ask you out of formality
00:00:03.703 --> 00:00:05.671
do you believe that smoking cigarettes over time
00:00:05.772 --> 00:00:09.001
can lead to lung cancer and other respiratory conditions
00:00:09.108 --> 00:00:10.302
such as emphysema
00:00:12.178 --> 00:00:13.668
Yes
00:00:16.516 --> 00:00:17.414
In fact I think you'd be hard pressed
00:00:17.517 --> 00:00:18.609
to find someone who really believes
00:00:18.718 --> 00:00:20.686
that cigarettes are not potentially harmful
00:00:20.787 --> 00:00:23.999
I mean show of hands who out here thinks
00:00:23.122 --> 00:00:24.612
that cigarettes aren't dangerous Mr Naylor
00:00:24.724 --> 00:00:27.852
There's no need for theatrics
00:00:27.961 --> 00:00:30.521
Sir I just don't see the point in a warning label for something people already know
00:00:30.063 --> 00:00:31.927
The warning symbol
00:00:32.999 --> 00:00:35.066
is a reminder a reminder of the dangers of smoking cigarettes
00:00:35.768 --> 00:00:37.599
Well if we want to remind people of danger
00:00:37.704 --> 00:00:39.228
why don't we slap a skull and crossbones
00:00:39.339 --> 00:00:40.306
on all Boeing airplanes
00:00:40.406 --> 00:00:41.839
Senator Lothridge
00:00:41.941 --> 00:00:42.873
And all Fords Senator Dupree
00:00:42.976 --> 00:00:45.308
That is ridiculous
00:00:45.411 --> 00:00:47.709
The death toll from airline and automobile accidents
00:00:47.814 --> 00:00:49.873
doesn't even skim the surface of cigarettes
00:00:49.983 --> 00:00:51.997
They don't even compare
00:00:51.015 --> 00:00:53.209
Oh this from a senator who calls Vermont home
00:00:53.319 --> 00:00:55.446

00:00:55.555 --> 00:00:57.216
Well the real
00:00:57.323 --> 00:00:59.883
demonstrated number one killer in America is cholesterol
00:00:59.993 --> 00:01:00.982
and here comes Senator Finistirre
00:01:01.001 --> 00:01:03.324
whose fine state is I regret to say
00:01:03.429 --> 00:01:06.455
clogging the nation's arteries with Vermont cheddar cheese
00:01:08.101 --> 00:01:10.831

00:01:10.937 --> 00:01:11.904
dying of heart attacks
00:01:12.955 --> 00:01:13.267
Perhaps Vermont cheddar
00:01:13.373 --> 00:01:15.739
should come with a skull and crossbones
00:01:15.842 --> 00:01:17.673
That is lud
00:01:17.777 --> 00:01:18.744

Mr Naylor
00:01:21.581 --> 00:01:23.998
we are here to discuss cigarettes
00:01:23.182 --> 00:01:26.001
Not planes not cars cigarettes
00:01:26.919 --> 00:01:29.581
Now as we discussed earlier these warning labels
00:01:29.999 --> 00:01:32.886
are not for those who know but rather for those who don't know
00:01:34.861 --> 00:01:36.852
What about the children
00:01:36.999 --> 00:01:38.988
Gentlemen
00:01:39.999 --> 00:01:41.996

00:02:11.999 --> 00:02:13.958
and his development
00:02:14.007 --> 00:02:15.001
And I'm proud of that
00:02:15.702 --> 00:02:16.964
Well having said that
00:02:17.993 --> 00:02:19.063
would you condone him smoking
00:02:19.739 --> 00:02:22.998
Well of course not He's not 18
00:02:22.001 --> 00:02:23.233

00:02:32.185 --> 00:02:33.999
Come on Mr Naylor
00:02:33.001 --> 00:02:37.999
On his 18th birthday will you share a cigarette with him
00:02:37.523 --> 00:02:39.999
Will you spend a lovely afternoon
00:02:39.001 --> 00:02:42.001
like one of your ludicrous cigarette advertisements
00:02:42.999 --> 00:02:43.999
You seem to have a lot to say
00:02:43.001 --> 00:02:45.994
about how we should raise our children
00:02:45.001 --> 00:02:46.999

Movie Summary

Nick Naylor is a charismatic spin-doctor for Big Tobacco who'll fight to protect America's right to smoke -- even if it kills him -- while still remaining a role model for his 12-year old son. When he incurs the wrath of a senator bent on snuffing out cigarettes, Nick's powers of "filtering the truth" will be put to the test.
