They set out to meet the bombers. The two groups make
rendezvous over the English Channel, and with the fighters patrolling
the skies around the bomber formation, the air armada moves into enemy territory. The bombers received
limited protection from the smaller, more nimble fighter planes,
like the P-47 Thunderbolt, whose limited fuel capacity
forced it to leave the bombers once they crossed deep into Germany. The crewmen were in an alien world to where they physically could not survive
without specialized clothing, without specialized equipment, without breathing oxygen
that was being pumped to them
