Ruben Soames: [looking at an empty field] You know what this right here is? What it is, is a cemetery. Though you wouldn't ever know it, from looking at it, on account of the fact they're no headstones. But that's because this is a different kind of cemetery. An old slave burial ground. And everybody knows slaves didn't have no money of their own to ever bury their loved ones with headstones. All throughout the south, you see big empty fields just like this one. And though you'd never know it to look, our entire history, the history of black people in the south, of our slave ancestors, is buried everywhere out here. Deep underground, pretty much everywhere you look, that's where our history is, in all these vast empty fields. In some places, they even put up all these statues, you know like all these confederate monuments and statues you see all around here, a lot of them were put up right on top of slave burial grounds. Almost like taking one history and putting it right on top of another. Taking one man's legacy, and putting it on top of another, 'til one day the other gets pushed down so deep, buried so deep... can't no one ever find it no more

You know what this right here is
00:00:04.067 --> 00:00:06.023
Not sure
00:00:06.043 --> 00:00:08.098
What it is is a cemetery
00:00:09.018 --> 00:00:11.078
Now you can't tell from looking at it
00:00:11.097 --> 00:00:14.009
on account of the fact that there's no headstones
00:00:15.001 --> 00:00:16.082
Why's that
00:00:17.002 --> 00:00:20.011
RUBEN That's 'cause it's a different kind of cemetery
00:00:20.031 --> 00:00:23.057
It's an old slave burial ground
00:00:23.077 --> 00:00:26.082
Everybody knows slaves didn't have no money of their own
00:00:27.002 --> 00:00:30.017
to ever bury their loved ones with a headstone
00:00:31.021 --> 00:00:33.067
Though you can't really tell by looking at it
00:00:34.092 --> 00:00:37.069
our entire history
00:00:37.089 --> 00:00:41.015
history of Black people in the South
00:00:41.035 --> 00:00:43.078
history of Black people in America
00:00:43.097 --> 00:00:46.098
sighs of our slave ancestors it's
00:00:47.018 --> 00:00:50.028
it's all buried everywhere out here
00:00:50.047 --> 00:00:52.044
Deep underground
00:00:52.064 --> 00:00:56.023
Pretty much everywhere you look that's where our history is
00:00:56.043 --> 00:00:59.058
In these vast empty fields
00:01:00.067 --> 00:01:05.999
In some places they put up all these statues
00:01:05.052 --> 00:01:08.048
You know like all these Confederate monuments
00:01:08.001 --> 00:01:10.063
and statues you see everywhere
00:01:12.042 --> 00:01:17.001
All the lot of 'em is put up right on top of a slave burial field
00:01:17.999 --> 00:01:18.058
Mm hmm
00:01:20.006 --> 00:01:23.019
It's like taking one history
00:01:23.039 --> 00:01:25.999
and putting it right on top of another
00:01:26.999 --> 00:01:29.001
It's like taking one man's legacy
00:01:30.994 --> 00:01:32.001
putting it on top of another
00:01:32.999 --> 00:01:37.069
Till one day it gets pushed down so deep
00:01:37.089 --> 00:01:40.067
buried so deep
00:01:42.042 --> 00:01:44.001
can't no one ever find it no more
00:01:55.001 --> 00:01:56.086
WOMAN Some of the members came to me
00:01:57.002 --> 00:01:58.001
and told me that
