Henry Kissinger:
[Reflecting on Nixon during his visit to the Soviet Union in final days of his presidency]
I felt more warmly toward my doomed chief than at any previous time. Whatever happened and whoever else deserted, I had determined to stick by the president who had appointed me to high office, to vindicate the continuity of government. But in the recesses of my soul, I began to to feel what I am told is sometimes the attitude of survivors toward the terminally ill: I hoped that since the end was inevitable, it would - for the sake of our country - be quick and if it had to happen, it would - for the sake of the president - be merciful

I felt more warmly toward
00:00:02.078 --> 00:00:05.053
my doomed chief than at any previous time
00:00:06.064 --> 00:00:09.077
Whatever happened and whoever else deserved it
00:00:09.077 --> 00:00:12.169
I had determined to stick by the president
00:00:12.169 --> 00:00:15.738
who had appointed me to high office to vindicate
00:00:15.738 --> 00:00:17.072
the continuity of government
00:00:18.068 --> 00:00:22.028
But in the recesses of my soul I began to feel
00:00:22.028 --> 00:00:23.085
what I am told is sometimes
00:00:23.085 --> 00:00:27.064
the attitude of survivors toward the terminally ill
00:00:28.084 --> 00:00:31.063
I hoped that since the end was unavoidable
00:00:31.063 --> 00:00:34.425
it would for the sake of our country be quick
00:00:34.425 --> 00:00:36.052
and that if it had to happen
00:00:36.052 --> 00:00:39.088
it would for the sake of the president be merciful

Movie Summary
Chronicle of Nixon's last months in the White House. A paranoid power-abuser, but also all too human--a confused, pathetic individual who cannot fully comprehend how, in less than one year, he can lose everything he has worked for in life.
