The Fog

The celebration tonight is a travesty. We're honoring murderers

Father Malone:

[reading from Patrick Malone's journal]
"December 9: Met with Blake this evening for the first time. He stood in the shadows to prevent me from getting a clear look at his face. What a vile disease this is. He is a rich man with a cursed condition, but this does not prevent him from trying to better his situation and that of his comrades at the colony. December 11: Blake's proposition is simple, He wants to move off Tanzier Island and re-locate the entire colony just north of here. He has purchased a clipper ship called the Elizabeth Dane with part of his fortune and asks only for permission to settle here. I must balance my feelings of mercy and compassion for this poor man, with my revulsion at the thought of a leper colony only a mile distant. April 20: The six of us met tonight. From midnight until one o'clock, we planned the death of Blake and his comrades. I tell myself that Blake's gold will allow the church to be built, and our small settlement to become a township, but it does not soothe the horror that I feel being an accomplice to murder. April 21: The deed is done. Blake followed our false fire on shore and the ship broke apart on the rocks off Spivey Point. We were aided by an unearthly fog that rolled in, as if Heaven sent, although God had no part in our actions tonight. Blake's gold will be recovered tomorrow, but may the Lord forgive us for what we've done." I couldn't read any further. Sandy Fadel:

"December 9.
00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.236
"Met with Blake this evening for the first time.
00:00:07.104 --> 00:00:08.304
"He stood in the shadows
00:00:08.372 --> 00:00:11.542
"to prevent me from getting a clear look at his face.
00:00:12.081 --> 00:00:14.978
"What a vile disease this is.
00:00:16.146 --> 00:00:19.149
"He is a rich man with a cursed condition,
00:00:20.116 --> 00:00:23.653
"but this does not prevent him from trying to better his situation
00:00:23.072 --> 00:00:26.122
and that of his comrades at the colony."
00:00:46.977 --> 00:00:49.214
Every single gauge is broken.
00:00:51.782 --> 00:00:53.784
- All the glass is shattered. - Remind you of something?
00:00:53.951 --> 00:00:55.286
- Last night. - Your truck.
00:00:55.353 --> 00:00:57.788
Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:04.795 --> 00:01:06.001
The thermometer's broken.
00:01:08.298 --> 00:01:10.005
The Mercury's stuck at 20 degrees.
00:01:13.999 --> 00:01:14.837
There's no water got in here,
00:01:14.905 --> 00:01:16.001
but something awful cold did.
00:01:18.999 --> 00:01:21.744
"December 11. Blake's proposition is simple.
00:01:22.001 --> 00:01:24.714
"He wants to move off Tanzier Island
00:01:24.782 --> 00:01:28.652
"and relocate the entire colony just north of here.
00:01:29.072 --> 00:01:31.654
"He has purchased a clipper ship
00:01:31.822 --> 00:01:34.825
"called the Elizabeth Dane.
00:01:35.593 --> 00:01:37.004
"With part of his fortune
00:01:37.161 --> 00:01:40.197
"and asks only for permission to settle here.
00:01:40.764 --> 00:01:44.167
"I must balance my feelings of mercy and compassion
00:01:44.235 --> 00:01:48.538
"toward this poor man with my revulsion at the thought
00:01:48.999 --> 00:01:51.608
of a leper colony only a mile distant."
00:02:10.999 --> 00:02:11.999
It's rusted to the wall.
00:02:16.001 --> 00:02:17.999
It was on.
00:02:25.999 --> 00:02:28.999
- They drank a lot of beer last night. - Every night.
00:02:29.001 --> 00:02:30.001
What's it like?
00:02:31.548 --> 00:02:33.001
It's always the same. Room starts spinning...
00:02:33.785 --> 00:02:34.001
I mean fishing.
00:02:38.756 --> 00:02:40.991
You fish.
00:02:40.003 --> 00:02:42.999
The only thing I know about fishing is you use a lot of worms.
00:02:42.727 --> 00:02:44.987
Hmm.
00:02:45.001 --> 00:02:46.999
Salt water.
00:02:49.131 --> 00:02:51.999
She was clean 2 nights ago. I checked her out myself.
00:02:51.001 --> 00:02:54.047
And now it's as if she's been turned over in the water.
00:02:57.001 --> 00:03:00.376
"April 20. The six of us met tonight.
00:03:01.999 --> 00:03:03.992
"From midnight until 1:00,
00:03:03.114 --> 00:03:06.999
"we planned the death of Blake and his comrades.
00:03:07.417 --> 00:03:11.001
"I tell myself that Blake's gold will allow the church to be built
00:03:11.001 --> 00:03:14.999
"and our small settlement to become a township,
00:03:14.358 --> 00:03:17.056
"but it does not soothe the horror that I feel
00:03:17.999 --> 00:03:20.863
being an accomplice to murder."
00:03:23.934 --> 00:03:26.001
Now what?
00:03:28.006 --> 00:03:29.999
Wait for the coast guard.
00:03:34.001 --> 00:03:37.001
- I'm sorry. - What for?
00:03:38.989 --> 00:03:40.417
Ever since you picked me up, things have been going wrong.
00:03:40.584 --> 00:03:42.001
The clock broke, the windows have been breaking.
00:03:43.013 --> 00:03:45.721
- The weirdo at the door last night. - That isn't you.
00:03:45.001 --> 00:03:47.001
I'm not so sure.
00:03:48.008 --> 00:03:51.001
Things seem to happen to me. I'm bad luck.
00:03:53.999 --> 00:03:56.833
I don't believe in luck, good or bad.
00:03:58.001 --> 00:04:00.001
I don't believe in anything much.
00:04:03.001 --> 00:04:04.941
Something did happen once.
00:04:08.999 --> 00:04:09.846
My father was a fisherman.
00:04:10.999 --> 00:04:13.999
He ran a trawler out of Whitely Reef.
00:04:14.001 --> 00:04:18.654
One night, late, he was coming back in.
00:04:19.322 --> 00:04:22.018
He was out beyond the reef, out near Spivey Point.
00:04:23.999 --> 00:04:25.495
He looked to windward
00:04:25.002 --> 00:04:28.002
and saw a brig under shortsail
00:04:29.999 --> 00:04:31.999
heading right for him.
00:04:34.003 --> 00:04:37.998
And he radioed. There was no reply.
00:04:38.999 --> 00:04:42.975
Nothing moved on the deck, but she held her course.
00:04:44.002 --> 00:04:45.548
My dad and two of his hands,
00:04:45.001 --> 00:04:49.001
they boarded the brig... the Resa Jane.
00:04:50.002 --> 00:04:52.999
No one was on board.
