Twenty years after 9/11 I am stirred to remember
the innocents who died on that day
but I am also stirred to remember the purpose of that vicious attack. It wasn't to win a war it was to provoke us
to abandon the principles of democracy we claim to live by. The forever prisoner
is a living reminder of one of the ideals we abandoned,
equal justice under the law. As the saying goes,
there is no them, there is only us. If we believe in that idea,
how can we imprison a man without charge
for the remainder of his life? Not for what he did to us,
but for what we did to him

Twenty years after 9/11
00:00:02.076 --> 00:00:04.032
I am stirred to remember the innocents
00:00:04.004 --> 00:00:08.012
who died on that day but I am also stirred to remember
00:00:08.002 --> 00:00:10.016
the purpose of that vicious attack.
00:00:10.008 --> 00:00:12.002
It wasn't to win a war
00:00:12.048 --> 00:00:14.064
it was to provoke us to abandon the principles
00:00:14.072 --> 00:00:16.076
of democracy we claim to live by.
00:00:17.076 --> 00:00:19.084
The forever prisoner is a living reminder
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:23.008
of one of the ideals we abandoned, equal justice under the law.
00:00:24.032 --> 00:00:28.004
As the saying goes, there is no them, there is only us.
00:00:29.028 --> 00:00:32.006
If we believe in that idea, how can we imprison a man
00:00:32.068 --> 00:00:35.028
without charge for the remainder of his life?
00:00:35.008 --> 00:00:39.008
Not for what he did to us, but for what we did to him.
