I'll be very brief; Mr. Deverell asked me to speak with you on behalf of his stepson John. My boss feels your testimony would be very helpful in getting John acquitted on grounds of temporary insanity. Lt. Jack Cole:
Well, I have two problems there. First of all, I don't think John is insane. Troubled? Goes without saying. Needs help? Couldn't agree more; deserves all he can get, too. However, that applies to a lot of people I know who are perfectly sane. Which brings me to Second Of All: I prefer to call plays like this one the way I actually see them. Donald Cunningham:
Look, Mr. Cole, John has been going through a very difficult time. Lt. Jack Cole:
I'm sure that's true; otherwise, he wouldn't have taken his teacher and classmates hostage. Donald Cunningham:
He needs treatment, not prison. Lt. Jack Cole:
Are you his therapist? Because in view of what happened today, I think you owe his family a refund. Donald Cunningham:
