Only 600 miles to the south, there's a vast city. And here you find civilized man. Civilized man refused to adapt himself to his environment; instead, he adapted his environment to suit him. So he built cities, roads, vehicles, machinery, and he put up power lines to run his labour-saving devices. But somehow he didn't know where to stop. The more he improved his surroundings to make life easier, the more complicated he made it. So now his children are sentenced to 10-15 years of school, just to learn how to survive in this complex and hazardous habitat they were born into. And civilized man, who refused to adapt to his surroundings, now finds he has to adapt and re-adapt every hour of the day to his self-created environment. For instance, if it's Monday and 7:30 comes up, you have to dis-adapt from your domestic surroundings and re-adapt yourself to an entirely different environment. 8:00 means everybody has to look busy... 10:30 says you can stop looking busy for 15 minutes. And then you have to look busy again... And so your day is chopped into pieces, and in each segment of time you adapt to a new set circumstances.

Young woman with noise in her head:
Does the noise in my head bother you?
Young woman with noise in her head:
No...
Kate Thompson:
[Later, Kate finds Pete]
Pete, Have you still got that story about the teacher shortage in Botswana?
Pete:
Yeah, you gonna use it?
Kate Thompson:
No. Maybe they can use me.
Narrator:
But in the Kalahari, it's always Tuesday, or Thursday if you like, or Sunday. No clocks or calendars tell you to do this or that.

00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:05.369
Only 600 miles to the south,
there's a vast city...
00:00:08.873 --> 00:00:11.943
and here you find
civilized man.
00:00:34.832 --> 00:00:36.768
Civilized man
refused to adapt himself
00:00:36.768 --> 00:00:38.836
to his environment.
00:00:38.836 --> 00:00:41.105
Instead, he adapted
his environment to suit him,
00:00:41.105 --> 00:00:44.341
so he built cities, roads,
vehicles, machinery,
00:00:44.341 --> 00:00:45.743
and he put up power lines
00:00:45.743 --> 00:00:48.713
to run
his labor-saving devices,
00:00:48.713 --> 00:00:50.748
but somehow,
he didn't know when to stop.
00:00:50.748 --> 00:00:52.484
The more
he improved his surroundings
00:00:52.484 --> 00:00:54.619
to make his life easier,
00:00:54.619 --> 00:00:56.521
the more complicated
he made it,
00:00:56.521 --> 00:00:57.822
so now his children
are sentenced
00:00:57.822 --> 00:01:00.558
to 10 to 15 years of school
00:01:00.558 --> 00:01:02.259
just to learn how to survive
00:01:02.259 --> 00:01:03.961
in this complex
and hazardous habitat
00:01:03.961 --> 00:01:06.013
they were born into.
And civilized man,
00:01:06.013 --> 00:01:08.005
who refused to adapt himself
to his natural surroundings,
00:01:08.005 --> 00:01:10.902
now finds he has to adapt
and re-adapt himself
00:01:10.902 --> 00:01:12.804
every day
and every hour of the day
00:01:12.804 --> 00:01:15.206
to his self-created
environment.
00:01:15.206 --> 00:01:17.999
For instance,
if the day is called Monday
00:01:17.999 --> 00:01:19.041
and the number 7-3-0 comes up,
00:01:19.041 --> 00:01:22.514
you have to dis-adapt yourself
from your domestic surroundings
00:01:22.514 --> 00:01:23.848
and re-adapt yourself
00:01:23.848 --> 00:01:28.119
to an entirely
different environment.
00:01:32.824 --> 00:01:36.193
8-00 means everybody
has to look busy.
00:01:42.004 --> 00:01:45.336
I've got a very good story here
about handicapped children.
00:01:45.336 --> 00:01:48.999
- Handicapped children?
- No! You don't...
00:01:48.999 --> 00:01:52.003
Uh, yeah, all right.
Look, I'm sorry.
00:01:52.003 --> 00:01:53.001
I'll only print
sweetness and light,
00:01:53.001 --> 00:01:55.001
even if
it bores the pants off them.
00:01:55.001 --> 00:01:59.999
10-3-0 says you can stop
looking busy for 15 minutes...
00:02:01.352 --> 00:02:06.001
and then
you have to look busy again.
00:02:06.001 --> 00:02:07.001
Hi, Kate.
Hi, Pete.
00:02:07.001 --> 00:02:08.999
Think you can use this?
00:02:08.999 --> 00:02:10.001
It's about the shortage
of teachers in Botswana.
00:02:10.001 --> 00:02:11.001
Good story?
00:02:11.001 --> 00:02:13.565
Yeah, they're so short,
00:02:13.565 --> 00:02:15.003
they'll take anybody
who can read and write.
00:02:15.003 --> 00:02:16.001
I don't know.
I got bawled out
00:02:16.001 --> 00:02:18.001
for writing a story
on mugging.
00:02:18.001 --> 00:02:21.003
He says my page should only
have sweetness and light,
00:02:21.003 --> 00:02:22.999
like Liberace
and Jackie Onassis. I'm sorry.
00:02:22.999 --> 00:02:25.001
And so your day is chopped up
into little pieces,
00:02:25.001 --> 00:02:27.999
and in each segment of time,
00:02:27.999 --> 00:02:28.999
you have adapt
to a new set of circumstances.
00:02:28.999 --> 00:02:31.994
May I share a table?
00:02:31.994 --> 00:02:34.988
No wonder some people
go off the rails a bit.
00:02:36.988 --> 00:02:39.012
Does the noise
in my head bother you?
00:02:40.858 --> 00:02:42.727
No.
00:02:42.727 --> 00:02:44.001
Pete, Have you still
got that story
00:02:44.001 --> 00:02:46.001
about the teacher
shortage in Botswana?
00:02:46.001 --> 00:02:48.465
Yeah.
You going to use it?
00:02:48.465 --> 00:02:49.001
No. Maybe they can use me.
00:02:49.001 --> 00:02:51.001
But in the Kalahari,
00:02:51.001 --> 00:02:54.471
it's always Tuesday,
or Thursday if you like,
00:02:54.471 --> 00:02:56.008
or Sunday.
00:02:56.008 --> 00:03:00.999
No clocks or calendars
tell you to do this or that.
00:03:00.999 --> 00:03:03.001
Lately, strange new things
sometimes appeared in the sky--
00:03:03.001 --> 00:03:07.999
noisy birds that flew
without flapping their wings.
00:03:20.798 --> 00:03:23.001
One day,
something fell from the sky.
00:03:38.001 --> 00:03:40.952
Xi had never seen
anything like this in his life.
00:03:40.952 --> 00:03:43.001
It looked like water,
00:03:43.001 --> 00:03:46.958
but it was harder than
anything else in the world.
00:03:46.958 --> 00:03:49.226
He wondered why the gods
had sent this thing
00:03:49.226 --> 00:03:51.999
down to the earth.
00:03:54.565 --> 00:03:56.999
It was the strangest
and most beautiful thing
00:03:56.999 --> 00:03:58.001
they had ever seen,
00:03:58.001 --> 00:04:01.405
and they wondered why the gods
had sent it to them.
00:04:07.001 --> 00:04:10.114
Pabo got his finger
stuck in the thing,
00:04:10.114 --> 00:04:12.999
and the children
thought he was very funny.
00:04:23.002 --> 00:04:26.063
At first, Xi tried
the thing out to cure thongs.
00:04:26.063 --> 00:04:30.001
It had the right shape
and just the right weight.
00:04:30.001 --> 00:04:34.002
It was also beautifully smooth
and ideal for curing snakeskin.
00:04:38.001 --> 00:04:42.002
And Pabo discovered
you could make music on it,
