to discuss the housekeeping details that any woman moving out would talk over with any woman moving in. She told me that she would
like to ask a favor of me. What she wanted
was to let Caroline's school go on in progress on the third floor. And that was the easiest thing
to say yes to. She went on to say a lot of things, like, "Don't be frightened of this house. You will be happy here." She repeated that over and over as though she were trying to reassure me
