Great Gable is a momentous mountain
- not just for its size and scale, but for a memorial near its summit. After the Great War,
it was decided to remember those who loved these fells but who never
returned from the battlefield. High in the clouds, these were seen
as the hills of freedom. The Fell and Rock Climbing Club
bought Great Gable and a dozen other summits to mark the sacrifice
of their members who died serving their country. The tops of these hills are now
in the hands of the National Trust, and each year on Great Gable,
there's a memorial service on Remembrance Sunday. My climb to the top of this mountain
has taken three hours, and I can't think of a better place
to reflect on those who've gone before me and who didn't get
the chance to fully enjoy this majestic landscape
