Brendan: [narrating] How many? How many trials will it take for this rat to run this maze without making any mistakes? How quickly will the rat complete the maze each time? Over multiple trials, will he get faster? Over time, rats tend to run the maze with fewer and fewer errors. Soon, they eliminate the errors altogether, and move faster. As it moves, it's creating an internal map of its world.
Brendan: Researchers use maze studies to help identify general principles about learning and memory, and what they learn can be applied to other species. Even us.
Brendan: I design games. I code. In video games, we come across these principles each time we play. They are designed so we use our memory to learn, adapt and advance. Without our memory, we'd get nowhere

How many
00:00:04.371 --> 00:00:07.071
How many trials will it take for this rat to run this maze
00:00:07.073 --> 00:00:09.991
without making any mistakes
00:00:10.511 --> 00:00:13.481
How quickly will the rat complete the maze each time
00:00:15.449 --> 00:00:17.317
Over multiple trials will he get faster
00:00:20.032 --> 00:00:22.042
Over time rats tend to run the maze
00:00:22.422 --> 00:00:24.001
with fewer and fewer errors
00:00:26.193 --> 00:00:28.362
Soon they eliminate the errors altogether
00:00:29.596 --> 00:00:31.329
and move faster
00:00:31.331 --> 00:00:33.365
As the rat moves it's creating
00:00:33.367 --> 00:00:35.027
an internal map of its world
00:00:36.471 --> 00:00:38.137
Researchers use maze studies
00:00:38.139 --> 00:00:39.538
to help identify general principles
00:00:39.054 --> 00:00:42.024
about learning and memory
00:00:42.242 --> 00:00:45.002

I code In video games we come across these principles
00:00:56.323 --> 00:00:58.391
each time we play
00:00:58.393 --> 00:01:01.494
They are designed so we use our memory
00:01:01.496 --> 00:01:04.565
to learn adapt and advance
