Annie Sullivan: I have to live with her somewhere else.
Kate Keller: For how long?
Annie Sullivan: Until she learns to listen to and depend on me.
Captain Arthur Keller: Miss Sullivan...
Annie Sullivan: Captain Keller, it meets both of your conditions. It's the one way I can get back in touch with Helen, and I don't see how I can be rude to you again if you're not around to interfere with me.
Captain Arthur Keller: And what's your plan if I say no? Pack the other half for home and abandon your charge to... to...
Annie Sullivan: The asylum? I grew up in such an asylum, the State Alms House. Rats? Why, my brother Jimmy and I used to play with the rats because we didn't have any toys. Maybe you'd like to know what Helen will find there, not on visiting days. One ward was full of the old women. Crippled, blind, most of them dying, but even if what they had was catching, there was nowhere else to move them. That's where they put us. Then there were younger ones across the hall, prostitutes mostly, with TB and epileptic fits. And some of the kind that keep after other girls, especially the young ones. And some were just insane. Some had the DTs. Then there were girls in another ward to have babies they didn't want. They started at thirteen, fourteen. They left afterwards, but the babies stayed. We played with them, too. There were a lot of them, with sores all over from diseases you're not supposed to talk about

Give up
00:00:03.795 --> 00:00:06.088
You said it was hopeless Here
00:00:07.215 --> 00:00:10.592
Give up Why I only today saw what was to be done to begin
00:00:11.928 --> 00:00:14.513
I want complete charge of her You already have that
00:00:14.514 --> 00:00:16.999
No I mean day and night
00:00:17.001 --> 00:00:19.351
She has to be dependent on me For what
00:00:19.352 --> 00:00:20.853
Everything
00:00:20.854 --> 00:00:25.019
The food she eats the clothes she wears fresh air
00:00:26.999 --> 00:00:28.569
Yes the air she breathes
00:00:28.057 --> 00:00:32.239
Whatever her body needs is a primer to teach her out of
00:00:32.024 --> 00:00:33.949
It's the only way
00:00:33.095 --> 00:00:36.091
The one who lets her have it should be her teacher not anyone who loves her
00:00:36.911 --> 00:00:39.705
But if she runs from you to us Yes
00:00:40.248 --> 00:00:42.075
That's the point
00:00:43.668 --> 00:00:45.377
I'll have to live with her somewhere else
00:00:47.797 --> 00:00:49.298
For how long
00:00:49.299 --> 00:00:52.003
Until she learns to listen to and depend on me
00:00:52.051 --> 00:00:54.072
I packed half my things already Miss Sullivan
00:00:54.721 --> 00:00:56.513
It meets your conditions
00:00:56.089 --> 00:00:59.997
It's the one way I can get back in touch with Helen
00:00:59.001 --> 00:01:01.852
I don't see how I can be rude to you if you're not around to interfere
00:01:01.853 --> 00:01:03.729
And what is your intention if I say no
00:01:03.073 --> 00:01:07.441
Pack the other half for home and abandon your charge to
00:01:07.999 --> 00:01:08.999
The asylum
00:01:08.902 --> 00:01:12.321
I grew up in such an asylum The State Almshouse
00:01:12.614 --> 00:01:16.867
My brother Jimmy and I used to play with the rats because we didn't have toys
00:01:18.953 --> 00:01:22.748
Maybe you'd like to know what Helen will find there not on visiting days
00:01:22.749 --> 00:01:26.794
One ward was full of the old women crippled blind most of them dying
00:01:26.795 --> 00:01:29.379
but even if what they had was catching there was nowhere to move them
00:01:29.038 --> 00:01:31.381
That's where they put us
00:01:31.758 --> 00:01:34.999
There were other ones across the hall prostitutes mostly
00:01:34.004 --> 00:01:35.999
with TB and epileptic fits
00:01:35.097 --> 00:01:38.889
and a couple of the kind who keep after other girls
00:01:38.089 --> 00:01:41.004
especially young ones
00:01:42.056 --> 00:01:44.812
And some insane Some just had the DTs
00:01:45.271 --> 00:01:47.999
The youngest were in another ward to have babies they didn't want
00:01:47.482 --> 00:01:49.358
They started at 13 14
00:01:49.526 --> 00:01:52.236
They'd leave afterwards but the babies stayed and we played with them too
00:01:52.999 --> 00:01:55.028
A lot of them had sores all over from diseases you weren't to mention
