The Abbot: A few lines of Greek.William of Baskerville:Yes, written by Venantius. Notes from the book he was reading, just before he died. You see how the calligraphy changes?William of Baskerville:From this point on, he was dying. And what can we conclude from that?The Abbot:A spot of blue paint.William of Baskerville:Yes, but a unique smudge of blue... blended by your finest illuminator, brother Adelmo, who possessed this parchment before Venantius. How do we know that? Because those notes overrun... Adelmo's blue smudge, and not vice-versa.The Abbot:Brother William... this abbey is enshrouded in a terrifying mystery. Yet, I detect nothing, in your obscure dissertation... that sheds any light upon it.William of Baskerville:Adso, the light.William of Baskerville:Someone was at great pains to conceal a secret... of the first magnitude. The calligraphy is, without question, left-handed.William of Baskerville:The only left-handed member of your community is... or rather was... brother Berengar, the assistant librarian. Now, what kind of secret knowledge would he have been privy to?The Abbot: I feel you're about to tell me.William of Baskerville:Books. Restricted books. Spiritually dangerous books. Everyone here knew of the assistant's passion... for handsome boys.William of Baskerville:When the beautiful Adelmo wanted to read such a forbidden book, Berengar offered him the key to its whereabouts enciphered on that parchment, in exchange for... unnatural caresses.The Abbot: Enough, brother William!William of Baskerville:Adelmo submitted to Berengar's lustful advances. But afterwards, wracked by remorse, he wandered desperate in the graveyard, where he met the Greek translator.The Abbot:How could you know this?William of Baskerville:There was a witness. The hunchback.William of Baskerville:Who saw Adelmo giving this parchment to Venantius, and running towards the small tower, and hurling himself out of the window. The night of my arrival, while Berengar punished his sinful flesh...William of Baskerville:Venantius, following the instructions on the parchment, entered the forbidden library and found the book. He took it back to his desk and began to read it. After scribbling down those mysterious quotations, he died with a black stain on his finger. The assistant discovered the body, and dragged it down to the pigpen to avert suspicion falling on him. But he left his "autograph" behind.William of Baskerville:The book remained on the translator's desk. Berengar returned there last night and read it. Soon after, overcome by some agonizing pain, he tried to take a soothing bath with lime leaves, and drowned. He too had a blackened finger.William of Baskerville:All three died because of a book which kills... or for which men will kill.William of Baskerville:I therefore urge you to grant me access to the library.Jorge de Burgos:Brother William, your pride blinds you. By idolizing reason, you failed to see what is obvious to everyone in this abbey

00:00:04.005 --> 00:00:07.042
Written by Venantius
00:00:07.209 --> 00:00:12.667
Some random notes from the book he was reading just before he died
00:00:12.834 --> 00:00:16.625
Do you see how the calligraphy changes
00:00:17.125 --> 00:00:19.000
From this point on he was dying
00:00:19.167 --> 00:00:22.025
And what my lord do you conclude from that
00:00:23.917 --> 00:00:27.292
A smudge of blue paint
00:00:27.875 --> 00:00:30.875
Yes but a unique smudge of blue
00:00:31.002 --> 00:00:34.167
blended by your finest illuminator Brother Adelmo
00:00:34.334 --> 00:00:37.002
who possessed this parchment before Venantius
00:00:37.209 --> 00:00:40.209

Brother William this abbey is enshrouded in a terrifying mystery
00:00:52.625 --> 00:00:56.584
Yet I detect nothing in your obscure dissertation
00:00:56.075 --> 00:00:59.959
that sheds any light upon it
00:01:02.209 --> 00:01:03.584
Light
00:01:07.003 --> 00:01:13.459
Someone was at great pains to conceal a secret of the first magnitude
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.667
Now the calligraphy is without question left handed
00:01:17.834 --> 00:01:21.125
And the only left handed member of your community is
00:01:21.292 --> 00:01:24.959
or rather was Brother Berengar the assistant librarian
00:01:25.125 --> 00:01:30.834
Now what kind of secret knowledge would he have been privy to
00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.875
I have the feeling that you're about to tell me
00:01:34.003 --> 00:01:36.542
Books Restricted books
00:01:36.709 --> 00:01:40.167
Spiritually dangerous books
00:01:40.542 --> 00:01:44.709
Everyone here knew of the assistant librarian's passion for handsome boys
00:01:44.875 --> 00:01:48.075
When the beautiful Adelmo wanted to read such a forbidden book
00:01:48.917 --> 00:01:52.167
Berengar offered Adelmo the key to its whereabouts
00:01:52.334 --> 00:01:55.417
enciphered on that parchment
00:01:55.584 --> 00:02:00.834
in exchange for unnatural caresses Enough Brother William
00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:05.334
Adelmo agreed and duly submitted to Berengar's lustful advances
00:02:05.005 --> 00:02:08.002
Afterwards wracked by remorse he wandered
00:02:08.209 --> 00:02:12.667
crying and desperate in the graveyard where he met the Greek translator
00:02:12.834 --> 00:02:15.917
How could you know this There was a witness
00:02:16.003 --> 00:02:17.959
The hunchback
00:02:18.292 --> 00:02:22.792
who saw Adelmo giving this parchment to Venantius
