In spite of thevictory of Gudalcanal, Japan still held the vast territorysurrounding its homeland. It would take close to a yearto build the force large enough to launch the next major Americanoffensive in the Pacific. Meanwhile, when the marinesdocked in Melbourne, news of their successhad preceded them. We got to Melbourne and they were callingus saviors of Australia. You know what,it was music to our ears. When we arrived in Melbourne, we had no idea what Australianswere supposed to be like, or what the country wassupposed to be like. All we knew is we had beenunloaded there in heaven. You gotta keep in mind that the Australian-NewZealand army core. they were in Africa and... so, there was a shortage of men.
