boy, grabs his father, pulls him into the house and somehow gets
him onto his feet and half carries him up this
narrow winding staircase. I went to see the house, and I thought about
my 11-year-old father and his 180-pound dad. And I thought, he didn't
drag him into the house, and he sure as hell didn't
get them onto his feet and, you know, hoist
him up these stairs. This is a story, a story in which
Jack barely appears. Jack is not a subject, he
is an object in the story. This is a story about my father and what he would like you to
think is his coming of age
