The retro packet
and the retrorockets we talk about are really brakes. John Glenn's capsule was in space
with the large blunt end, facing forward, and the retrorockets are
on that blunt end. And what they are, is they throw
some thrust out forward, slowing the capsule down,
and that reduces its speed below orbital velocity, and the capsule
starts to reenter the atmosphere. All right, roger,
