The men would always appear
the same - cheerful and, in the circumstances,
happy as they could be, making the best of everything. You know, in true British fashion. What? The Cockney wit was prevalent
and we were all lads together, you know, we didn't care about it. We'd make a fuss about nothing,
the little things that didn't matter really, because it was something
to fill the time in. We used to have to make
our own amusements. Bloody bastard! You laughed at the slightest things. I think probably it was the
general tension of the atmosphere that used to make us like that,
you know? My mother sent me a parcel
with a plum pudding, of all things, and had no thought of
not being able to cook it, so we used it as a rugby ball. We had this regimental sports day. And I won't say
I was the only sober one, but most of them were merry
about it

The men would always appear
the same -
00:00:03.005 --> 00:00:07.375
cheerful and, in the circumstances,
happy as they could be,
00:00:07.375 --> 00:00:09.333
making the best of everything.
00:00:09.333 --> 00:00:11.875
You know, in true British fashion.
00:00:13.084 --> 00:00:17.251
What? The Cockney wit was prevalent
and we were all lads together,
00:00:17.251 --> 00:00:20.376
you know, we didn't care about it.
00:00:20.376 --> 00:00:24.501
We'd make a fuss about nothing,
the little things that didn't matter
00:00:24.501 --> 00:00:27.751
really, because it was something
to fill the time in.
00:00:27.751 --> 00:00:30.501
We used to have to make
our own amusements.
00:00:30.501 --> 00:00:31.793
Bloody bastard!
00:00:31.793 --> 00:00:33.046
You laughed at the slightest things.
00:00:33.046 --> 00:00:36.071
I think probably it was the
general tension of the atmosphere
00:00:36.071 --> 00:00:38.877
that used to make us like that,
you know?
00:00:40.096 --> 00:00:44.544
My mother sent me a parcel
with a plum pudding, of all things,
00:00:44.544 --> 00:00:47.169
and had no thought of
not being able to cook it,
00:00:47.169 --> 00:00:48.794
so we used it as a rugby ball.
00:00:50.461 --> 00:00:53.378
We had this regimental sports day.
00:00:53.378 --> 00:00:55.961
And I won't say
I was the only sober one,
00:00:55.961 --> 00:00:59.169
but most of them were merry
about it.
