I was doing a straight magic act, and I got stage fright
and everything went wrong. You know, I had a trick
with a bottle of milk that I turned upside-down
and it all came out, whereas it should have stayed in,
you know, and I was nearly in tears, but the audience seemed to enjoy it.
So after I calmed down, I thought, "Well, I'll try that idea."
So from then on, I started to do it
with the tricks going wrong. But any hope of finding work
as an entertainer died when Britain went to war
and everything went wrong. You know, I had a trick
