[explosion] [narrator] The German commander,
Field Marshal Albert
Kesselring, soon realised
the best he could do was delay the Allied invaders while preparing
a retreat to the mainland. Meanwhile the American
and British forces embarked on their
own private race. [artillery fire] As the U. S. Seventh Army
under General Patton advanced up to the north
of the island, the British Eighth Army
under General Montgomery took control of the east. Both Generals were highly
respected, brilliant leaders. But they were at odds
with each other. And after Montgomery
had led the Allies to success in North Africa, Patton was determined to drive the United States
to victory in Sicily and be recognised as the greatest general
of the war. If Montgomery
was the preeminent, one of the preeminent soldiers
of the Second World War, Patton, I think,
you'd have to put down as one of the preeminent
warriors of all time

[explosion]
00:00:02.084 --> 00:00:06.000
[narrator] The German commander,
Field Marshal Albert
Kesselring,
00:00:06.016 --> 00:00:08.999
soon realised
the best he could do
00:00:08.002 --> 00:00:10.012
was delay the Allied invaders
00:00:10.028 --> 00:00:12.092
while preparing
a retreat to the mainland.
00:00:13.008 --> 00:00:15.004
Meanwhile the American
and British forces
00:00:15.056 --> 00:00:17.076
embarked on their
own private race.
00:00:17.092 --> 00:00:20.092
[artillery fire]
00:00:21.998 --> 00:00:23.084
As the U. S. Seventh Army
under General Patton
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.036
advanced up to the north
of the island,
00:00:26.052 --> 00:00:29.999
the British Eighth Army
under General Montgomery
00:00:29.002 --> 00:00:30.084
took control of the east.
00:00:31.052 --> 00:00:35.998
Both Generals were highly
respected, brilliant leaders.
00:00:35.024 --> 00:00:37.056
But they were at odds
with each other.
00:00:37.072 --> 00:00:39.076
And after Montgomery
had led the Allies
00:00:39.092 --> 00:00:41.072
to success in North Africa,
00:00:41.088 --> 00:00:43.998
Patton was determined
00:00:43.024 --> 00:00:45.084
to drive the United States
to victory in Sicily
00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:47.002
and be recognised
00:00:47.036 --> 00:00:49.096
as the greatest general
of the war.
00:00:50.084 --> 00:00:52.064
If Montgomery
was the preeminent,
00:00:52.008 --> 00:00:55.008
one of the preeminent soldiers
of the Second World War,
00:00:55.096 --> 00:00:57.028
Patton, I think,
you'd have to put down
00:00:57.044 --> 00:00:59.044
as one of the preeminent
warriors of all time.
