one of his closest aides, Harry Hopkins, to report on the possible
future relationship between the United States
and the Soviet Union. He concluded that Russia's
post‐war position in Europe will be a dominant one, and every effort must be made
to obtain her friendship. Roosevelt quickly recognised that Stalin was going to be
a major player not only in the war,
but in the post‐war era, and he set out to develop
good relations with Stalin
