[narrator] Before the Big Three
met in Yalta they were already engaged
in a bitter dash to seize German territory. Hitler's forces were crumbling, and the Allies were moving
towards Germany in a race to claim the biggest prize
of all: Berlin. [explosions] The conquest would involve
a multi‐pronged approach. British and American forces
would make separate advances through Germany from the west, while Soviet troops
approached Berlin from the
east. The pivotal part
of their advance was crossing and conquering
the mighty Rhine. Over 700 miles long,
the river represented the last natural
defensive barrier to the German heartland. In anticipation of Allied
forces
getting that far, Hitler had ordered
the bridges across the river to be destroyed. [Sir Mike] The Americans
first crossed it somewhere, Remagen, I think.

they were already engaged
in a bitter dash
00:00:05.036 --> 00:00:07.012
to seize German territory.
00:00:07.028 --> 00:00:09.052
Hitler's forces were crumbling,
00:00:09.068 --> 00:00:11.052
and the Allies were moving
towards Germany
00:00:11.068 --> 00:00:13.999
in a race to claim
00:00:13.002 --> 00:00:15.016
the biggest prize
of all: Berlin.
00:00:15.032 --> 00:00:16.068
[explosions]
00:00:16.084 --> 00:00:19.056
The conquest would involve
a multi‐pronged approach.
00:00:19.072 --> 00:00:22.072
British and American forces
would make separate advances
00:00:22.088 --> 00:00:24.068
through Germany from the west,
00:00:24.084 --> 00:00:27.084
while Soviet troops
approached Berlin from the
east.
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:29.088
The pivotal part
of their advance
00:00:30.999 --> 00:00:32.064
was crossing and conquering
the mighty Rhine.
00:00:33.032 --> 00:00:36.036
Over 700 miles long,
the river represented
00:00:36.052 --> 00:00:38.028
the last natural
defensive barrier
00:00:38.044 --> 00:00:40.000
to the German heartland.
00:00:40.052 --> 00:00:43.006
In anticipation of Allied
forces
getting that far,
00:00:43.076 --> 00:00:46.068
Hitler had ordered
the bridges across the river
00:00:46.084 --> 00:00:48.012
to be destroyed.
00:00:48.068 --> 00:00:51.072
[Sir Mike] The Americans
first crossed it somewhere,
00:00:51.088 --> 00:00:55.999
Remagen, I think.
Almost by good luck,
00:00:55.006 --> 00:00:57.064
found a railway bridge unblown.
