fare much better in the early months
of the Second World War. He'd returned to the Admiralty determined
to rebuild his reputation as a military strategist. In an effort to try and slow
Hitler's advance, he championed a plan
to move allied troops into Norway and Sweden, to cut the supply lines
of iron ore to the Nazi War Machine. Unfortunately for the British,
the Germans got there first. They invaded Norway
on the 9th April, 1940. Britain attempted
a counterattack, but it was unsuccessful. The campaign was a military
and strategic disaster. Yet, this time, it was the prime minister,
Neville Chamberlain, rather than
the First Lord of the
Admiralty, that got the blame. I fear Chamberlain's goose
was already cooked
