the beaches were fully secured in the hands
of the Americans and British, and more than 326,000 men, 100,000 tons of equipment,
and 50,000 vehicles had
arrived. Mulberry B,
a temporary harbour, was built, and over the next ten months it was used to bring in
2.5 million troops, 500,000 vehicles, and 4 million tonnes
of supplies. Major General Rudi Hemmes had
made his way from the Netherlands to England to train as a soldier. Now he was
on his way back to fight
