money from the First World War, but Roosevelt won the day. And in March, 1941, $7 billion was agreed. For Churchill, that was a heavy price to be paid. The U.S. commandeered what was left of Britain's gold reserves and overseas investments, due to the nature of the cash-and-carry agreement. Lend-lease was the only method that could now aid Britain in the war. Britain was not the only beneficiary of the new policy. Our most useful
and immediate role is to act as an arsenal for them
as well as for ourselves
