Churchill's brilliant words transformed a military defeat
into an act of heroic defiance. [gloomy tune] But Dunkirk was, at best,
a glorious failure. I don't think Churchill
is ever under any illusions that this was anything
other than a catastrophic defeat and regarded it as so,
and just the prelude to what he expected,
which was a German invasion. And he was aware, of course,
that he got the soldiers off, but they left
all their artillery, and their trucks
and their tanks behind them
