[narrator]
Operation Market Garden, devised by Field Marshal
Bernard Law Montgomery, was to be
the largest airborne operation in the history of warfare. Its aim was
to secure the key bridges over three Dutch rivers in order to outflank
the heavy Nazi defences of the Siegfried Line
and enter the German heartland. It involved around
35,000 British, American and Polish airborne
and glider troops, who'd meet up with
the British Armoured Divisions on the ground. [Helen] The aim
of Operation Market Garden was to take strategically
important bridges and routes around Eindhoven and Nijmegen, and ultimately, of course,
we had to cross the Rhine
