was fatally compromised, and the way was now clear for the Allies to advance
on Germany. Meanwhile,
the diversion of German troops from the Eastern Front to fight
in the Battle of the Bulge left the way clear
for the Red Army to move into Poland. And on the 12th
of January, 1945, Stalin's troops launched
the Vistula Offensive. The Red Army
took just over two weeks to sweep across Poland, take almost all of East
Prussia,
and drive deep into Silesia. By the 2nd of February, they were less
than 50 miles from Berlin. The launch
of the Vistula‐Oder Offensive was scheduled
for the 20th of January, however, Stalin brought it
forward to the 12th
